Is it possible that elderly care could change a person’s life? I’m sure that it’s true for the elderly men and women who receive this level of care, but for me, it was a surprise. You see, I had been providing what elder care services that I could for my mother for about two years before I finally decided to look into the prospect of assisted living.
The reason that I didn’t even consider this option before was because I didn’t think that we could afford it. Once I read that the VA Aid and Attendance Pension Benefit can cover or reimburse some of the expenses for elderly care, depending on certain conditions, I looked into it more. I found out that my mother would qualify for that level of support and that meant that we could afford someone who knew what they were doing.
During the time that I was trying to provide elderly care for my mother, I learned that it was going to be a tough prospect, no matter what I did. My mother was a tough woman to work with and deal with. She was set in her ways and wasn’t willing to make any concessions when it came to her home. She kept saying that she had lived there for most of her life and that she had done just fine all of those years. She wouldn’t even consider the prospect that some things needed to change in order to ensure her health and safety.
At the same time, she wanted me to be there for her every whim, at her beck and call. I had a life and responsibilities of my own. Even though I didn’t have children, that didn’t change the fact that my time was somewhat limited. It began to affect my relationships, friendships, and even my work. I was stressed and didn’t know what else could go wrong.
Fortunately, though, we were able to afford assisted living and this changed my life. I could step back and work on my relationship with my mother, rather than trying to be her caregiver. I was able to get back on track with my work as well and even spend time with my friends. I felt as though I was losing myself because of the elderly care that my mother needed. I have to say that now, I realize that this level of care that she’s receiving now has certainly changed my life for the better and also given her the support that she needed all along.
